April 2009: Emilie David of Moda Hotel

As a frequent hotel guest, at hotels big and small all over the world, I have plenty of hotel receptionists to compare Ms. David to!

Ms. David exemplifies all that is sophisticated, urbane, calm, and friendly about Vancouver. She strikes the perfect note between warm welcome and brisk business. The way she checked me in was flawless and fast- truly a lost art. She even asked empathetically asked how my journey was- a question I have never been asked when checking in any hotel (not even the Beverly Wilshire!).

When I had a problem with my room, she instantly followed up and even thought to ask about it later (most staff would just pretend they don’t know you afterwards).

Most hotels don’t realize that the hotel receptionist is often the first citizen of the country we encounter when visiting, so first impressions are so critical.

These days, large and small hotels alike are guilty of poorly-trained, stressed staff who process guests as if we were cattle- not at Moda Hotel. Many receptionists also seem so resentful at their job because of the huge stress factor. It is so wonderful to come across one who embraces her position and understands hospitality, even at a modern small hotel.

I immediately wanted to vote her as best hotel receptionist of the year and also best face of New Vancouver!
